God and the Mediterranean

The great Abrahamic religions, although differing from one another in matters of doctrine, nevertheless share a fundamental premise: that God chose to reveal Himself, or at least to make His voice heard, in the Mediterranean region rather than elsewhere in the world. I have long wondered about the possible reasons for this singular preference.
