The Hindu Turtle
According to Hindu mythology, the world rests on the back of a gigantic turtle (Kurma, an avatāra of Viṣṇu). Yet if one asks who supports the turtle, no answer is given — and Christians tend to
smile at such “naïveté.” Curiously, however, Christianity adopts a very similar strategy: it claims that a creator created the world but urges us not to ask who created the creator. From a
logical standpoint, then, the turtle and God seem to share the same function: putting an end to inconvenient questions.
